Global Departure Update
Looking at data up to 22 May 2023:
- Last week’s small retreat in departures proved short lived as global departures soar to 122,000 per day (Chart 1). Departures sit 6% above 2019 levels.
- China’s recovery continues to tick along but may fail to see a real acceleration until after June with Zhong Nanshan, director of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease, stating that another wave of Covid-19 may peak in the summer month. The rest of Asia has continued to see departures increase (Charts 2 and 4).
- Departures across Europe took a step back as strikes impact European air travel again, with Portugal the latest to see a warning issued. Europe (-1.8% WoW) has seen departures slip over the past week.
