- In the DM world, the US set a new daily record at the end of last week. Thursday’s new cases stood at 78,389, the highest single day increase since the beginning of the pandemic. Since then, new cases steadily dropped to 61,847 on Sunday. Deaths have also been in the rise. Thursday had the highest daily increase of 956, while on Sunday it dropped to 415. But the latest numbers may not yet account for the weekend reporting lags.
- Texas and Florida have driven the increases in both cases and deaths. Ron DeSantis, Florida’s governor, has not yet implemented a statewide mask mandate, saying the state is not going to be “prosecuting people” who refuse them. Dr. Fauci, urged governors and mayors to be “as forceful as possible” in getting the citizens to wear masks.
- Dr. Francis Collins, director of National Institutes of Health, expressed optimism that an “effective treatment” for Covid-19 will be available in two to three months.
- In the UK, cases have seen minor increases in recent days. New infections stood at 726 on Sunday, an increase of almost 200 compared to last week’s low of 537. Numbers do not yet involve the potential weekend reporting lags.
- The UK government currently has the following vaccine agreements: 30mln doses from BioNTech and Pfizer, an agreement in principle for 100mln doses from Valneva, 100mln doses developed by Oxford University and AstaZeneca.
- In Australia, cases continue to rise (Saturday and Sunday at 361 and 267 respectively) even with the inter-state restrictions and the lockdown imposed in Melbourne.. The government has recently announced a new $10.2mn international research program into the growing rates of zoonotic diseases across south-east Asia and the Pacific.
- Japan recorded 846 new cases on Saturday, the highest during this second wave. The government will carry on its domestic tourism campaign, but will leave Tokyo out given the recent outbreak.
- In EM, India experienced its highest single day increase on Sunday. In the past two weeks, with the exception of Saturday, each day brought a new single-day record. While Maharashtra, the state with the highest case load, continues to see a rise in infections, Delhi managed to flatten the curve.
- South Africa saw the fourth consecutive day of more than 13,000 new cases.
- Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina remain at peak wave values, similar to Israel and the Philippines.
